HIP DYSPLASIA AND CANINE HIP REPLACEMENT
Canine hip dysplasia is one of the most common orthopedic conditions affecting dogs, particularly medium to large breeds, and is a significant cause of hind limb lameness and chronic pain. It is a progressive, developmental disease of the hip joint that leads to instability, cartilage wear, and eventually osteoarthritis. While medical management may help control discomfort in the short term, it does not address the underlying mechanical problem. Total hip replacement offers the most reliable path to restoring long-term comfort and normal function.
With surgical treatment, the expected outcome is for the patient to return to a fully active, pain-free lifestyle following recovery.
So, what sets our program apart?
Espanola Animal Hospital is a small, privately owned referral hospital focused exclusively on advanced orthopedic and spinal surgery. Total hip replacement is a core part of our surgical caseload and something we perform routinely. This is what we do every day. We provide advanced orthopedic care at a significantly lower cost than many larger specialty centres, while maintaining a high standard of surgical technique and implant selection. We also offer streamlined scheduling for out-of-town clients, with coordinated pre-operative assessment and surgical planning designed to minimize travel stress and time away from home. In many cases, patients are assessed the day prior to surgery and discharged the morning after their procedure, allowing for efficient but comprehensive care.
Every hip replacement case is managed from start to finish with a comprehensive approach. This includes thorough pre-operative orthopedic assessment, advanced imaging when indicated, and individualized surgical planning based on patient anatomy, size, and activity level. Post-operative care is structured to optimize recovery, including multimodal pain management protocols and controlled rehabilitation to support a safe return to function.
We aim to support each patient through diagnosis, surgery and recovery with clear communication and structured follow-up care.
We accept referrals from primary care veterinarians and work closely with referring clinics to ensure continuity of care. We do also accept client self-referrals.
Clients may also contact us directly to discuss suitability for total hip replacement or to arrange consultation.
